Batucada Drumming

…..Japan has its Kodo drummers but Spain has Batucada drummers!   No description can prepare you for the infectious, thundering rhythm-monster that is a Batucada drumming troupe.   At various times groups numbering in the hundreds will converge in mad yet astonishing experience of dance-induced latin explosion.  To be in the midst of a tightly run, adrenaline-pumped orchestra of Batucada drummers one will be swept away by its power and energy.   The groups are conducted by band-leaders who, using a complex system of hand signals and whistles (and usually insane jumping), direct the various sections of the group into a rhythmic, rollercoaster-like frenzy.

…..Batucada is one of the cultural treasures of Valencia which, once experienced, is never forgotten.  The finest example of batucada is at the annual Festival Alternativa, where competing troupes meet under the bridge of Flowers (the acoustics there are amplified to near apoplectic levels).   Come!

(Below is an example of a very small Batucada troupe performing at the Iboga Festival, an annual festival of Ska, Balkan and Swing music held in a nearby beach resort town.)
